Building Collapse Claims Four Lives in Spain’s Madrid
The remains of two victims were located late Tuesday evening, while rescue teams found the other two early Wednesday morning. Among the deceased are three construction workers and the architect overseeing the renovation project.
"It is with deep sadness that we can confirm that the Madrid Fire Brigade has recovered the two bodies that remained missing after the collapse of the building on Calle de las Hileras," the mayor of Madrid posted on social media.
The structure gave way shortly after 1:00 p.m. local time on Tuesday.
Three additional people were injured in the collapse. One sustained a broken leg and required hospitalization, while two others were treated for minor injuries, including cuts and bruises.
Eyewitnesses described a sudden, thunderous noise as the building came down, followed by a cloud of dust engulfing the street, according to reports from local media.
The exact cause of the structural failure remains unclear. As the collapse has been designated a "workplace accident," the investigation is being led by the Madrid Municipal Police.
