Spain's Rail Crash Death Toll Tops Forty

(MENAFN) The fatality count from Sunday's catastrophic train collision near Adamuz in southern Spain's Cordoba province has climbed to 43 following the discovery of another victim in the debris on Wednesday, Spanish authorities announced.

Emergency response teams report that 68 individuals remain under medical care across multiple facilities, with nine patients requiring intensive care treatment. Medical officials indicate none of the critically injured face immediate threats to their survival.

The devastating collision unfolded at approximately 7:45 p.m. local time (1845 GMT) Sunday evening when an Iryo-operated high-speed passenger service traveling northbound from Malaga toward Madrid left the tracks and struck a southbound Renfe train heading from Madrid to Huelva. Renfe operates as Spain's state-owned railway company.

Investigators continue working to determine what triggered the deadly crash. Authorities confirmed that specialized technical crews are conducting comprehensive examinations of both the railway infrastructure and the trains themselves, emphasizing that investigators have not yet drawn any firm conclusions about causation.

The nation experienced two additional railway incidents on Tuesday in Catalonia's northeastern territory. A train operator lost their life and no fewer than 37 passengers sustained injuries after a collapsing wall struck a commuter train operating near Gelida, while another train derailed following a rockfall incident near Blanes. Local authorities attributed both Tuesday accidents to severe rainstorms that have battered portions of the region in recent days.
