Benfica-Real Madrid Match Suspended After Racism Allegations

(MENAFN) A UEFA Champions League play-off clash between Benfica and Real Madrid was suspended for roughly 10 minutes on Tuesday night after allegations of racist abuse aimed at Vinicius Junior triggered UEFA’s anti-discrimination protocol.

The disruption unfolded during the second half at Estadio da Luz shortly after Vinicius put the Spanish giants ahead in the 50th minute. His goal handed Real Madrid a 1-0 advantage, but celebrations quickly turned contentious.

The Brazilian forward was booked for excessive celebration near the corner flag, moments before tensions escalated further following an exchange with Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni.

Vinicius then approached referee Francois Letexier, who responded by making the crossed-arms gesture — UEFA’s established signal indicating racist abuse. Shortly afterward, Vinicius exited the field, with his Real Madrid teammates following in a show of solidarity.

Players and staff from both clubs gathered on the pitch amid heated discussions. Benfica head coach Jose Mourinho was seen speaking directly with Vinicius as tensions simmered inside the Lisbon stadium.

Play eventually resumed after an interruption lasting approximately 10 minutes.
